CS9/ 68: English, Circa 1984, 16 1/4″ (41 cm) ‘Tertis’ style Viola. Labelled ‘ Gerald Littlewood, 1984. Hollingworth, Longdendale. No, 52’ Signed. With Obligato strings.
Good example of English making. Has a narrow neck. Guarneri model with one-piece ‘slab-cut’ back and medium-grain spruce front. Amber-golden oil finish. Wittner geared pegs.
A ‘Tertis’ model Viola has narrower upper bouts, wider lower bouts, and taller ribs. This maximizes the volume of air of the body, whilst allowing the musician to easily access the higher register by reaching around the narrower upper bouts. It is named after the viola player, Lionel Tertis, who favoured this style of viola.
